Bumpers, mirrors, fender flares and window trim are usually unpainted textured plastic. In Florida sun, that plastic dries out and turns gray and chalky, and no amount of washing brings the color back.
Why black trim fades
Plastic trim contains oils and dyes that break down under UV. As they leach out, the surface becomes porous and looks pale. Harsh cleaners and automatic car wash chemicals can speed it up.
Why most "trim shine" products disappoint
Silicone dressings make trim look dark for a day or two, then wash away with the next rain. They can also leave greasy residue that attracts dust. They only cover the problem for a few days.
How proper trim restoration works
- Deep clean. Remove old dressings, wax and dirt so the surface is truly clean.
- Prep. Mask surrounding paint and glass.
- Restore. Apply a restoration product designed to re-saturate and bond to the plastic.
- Cure. Allow proper cure time so it does not wash off in the first storm.

Keeping trim black
- Park in shade or a garage when possible.
- Avoid strong degreasers on trim.
- Reapply a trim protectant on a schedule.
- Wash gently. Aggressive brushes wear textured plastic.

Is trim restoration permanent?
It lasts much longer than a spray-on dressing, but no product is permanent under Florida sun. Regular protectant keeps it looking its best.
Can you restore trim that is badly faded?
In most cases yes, because fading is a color problem that can be brought back. It is not a trim repair: cracked, warped or gouged plastic will look better in color but the damage will remain, and we will tell you before we start.
Does trim restoration cost extra?
