How to Remove Lovebugs From Your Car Paint (Tampa Bay Guide)

Twice a year, usually around May and again in late summer, lovebugs swarm across Florida roads. Drive through a cloud of them and your bumper, hood and mirrors are plastered. Left alone, the splatter does more than look bad.

Why lovebugs damage paint

Lovebug remains are acidic, and they bake on in the Florida sun. The longer they sit, the harder they bond, and the more likely they are to leave etched marks in the clear coat that no wash will remove. The best defense is speed: get them off within a day or two of a heavy drive.

The safe way to remove them

1. Soften first. Soak the area with a wet, warm microfiber towel or a bug remover product designed for automotive paint. Let it dwell so the residue loosens.
2. Pre-rinse or foam. A rinse or foam layer lifts loose grit so you do not drag it across the paint. This is why we start with a foam wash.
3. Gentle contact wash. Use a clean wash mitt with plenty of lubrication, moving in straight lines.
4. Dry with clean microfiber. No paper towels or rough cloths.

What not to do

• Do not scrub dry. Dried bug remains plus a dry towel equals scratches.
• Do not use abrasive sponges. They will mar paint and clear coat.
• Do not use harsh household cleaners. They can strip protection and stain trim.
• Do not wait. Time is what turns a cleanup into paint damage.
